People all across the country go to the gym daily to lose weight, ranging from a few pounds to a whole other person (100+ pounds). It's not hard to lose weight when you do it right, but the people who are trying to lose weight make one huge mistake that will set them up for failure. 
When the goal is losing fat, the key is burning calories. Gym-goers run on a treadmill for hours on end and ride on the elliptical for an eternity in the hopes that they'll lose weight. This is a really good way to pressure yourself out of cheating or skipping exercise, since your subconscious will constantly remind you about having to face your acquaintances when they ask about the progress you've achieved.
